Desire something more and don’t know where to start, here are a few tips to help you confidently pivot for greater fulfillment.
Whether you worked a 9-to-5 or owned a business, when the pandemic hit you adjusted to support your family in previously unimaginable ways. The pandemic strong-armed you into making some tough choices. And you handled the challenge and change well. You brought your whole self and found creative ways to use your skills from juggling Zoom meetings to homeschooling and the in-between.
In a social media era supercharged by a worldwide pandemic and protests against racial injustice, you showed resilience, gained new skills, and learned a lot about yourself in the process. Now America is emerging from the pandemic, you are starting to venture out into the real world, and planning your return to the workforce. The thing is, the pandemic created an opportunity for you to rethink what was most important to you. So now you’re reconsidering your career and how to put your skills to work in exciting new ways. But, where do you start?
First, take a deep breath. Then pat yourself on the back because you’ve gotten this far! When you are ready, here are six steps to help you confidently pivot in an ever-evolving world.
Trust Your Intuition
One of the scariest moments in life is always making an uncertain change. But you must learn to listen to your intuition, especially when it’s telling you that stagnant complacency is not who you are. Make no mistake, intuition can sometimes go against logic, but don’t let fear discourage you and make you lose sight of what truly matters. Trust your intuition to point you towards a direction that truly honors who you are because you are worthy now. When you learn to flex your intuitive muscle, you will be more effective in saying “YES” if you feel positive and truly happy about the possibility of your decision, and “NO” if you feel negative and unsettled.
Know Your “WHY”
It is not enough to know what you do and how you do it. Remember, people don’t buy what you do, they buy ‘WHY’ you do it. Your WHY is your conviction, the statement of purpose that reminds you why you need to persevere and get out of bed when you don’t feel like it. Your why are the actual heart and the core source of motivation for you to endure despite. If you don’t have a clear why you will find yourself in constant overwhelm and confusion as to what value you bring.
Set Defined Goals
The key to your success will be to focus on your personal goals and not follow what everyone else is doing. Goal setting helps you stay motivated and enables you to be more proactive about what you want to achieve. Get intentional by writing out your goals with timelines and small steps to help you take action for greater efficiency and productivity. In the end, your goals will lead you towards better decision-making and open up new opportunities.
Market Yourself
If you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself, it’s time to get comfortable. Understand that self-promotion is a leadership skill, that is, when aligned with your skills and passion for something you believe in. Self-promotion is how you let others know who you are, what you do, and how you’re offering to help. It is how you sell yourself to your peers, clients, boss, and prospects to get buy-in for your ideas and contribution. When you understand that self-promotion is not about you then you’ll stop taking the back seat of waiting for recognition. It is your responsibility to talk about yourself so be proactive in telling the world who you are, what you do, and how you help create impact.
Identify Your Personal Value Proposition
As previously noted, marketing is how you ask them to join you and branding is why they say yes. The most powerful asset you have is your personal brand, and you want to take it seriously. And the first and most important step in honing your personal brand is getting clear on your unique personal value proposition (the benefit you have to offer). Zeroing on a compelling PVP requires that you take some time to reflect on the key components of your personal brand: values, passions, purpose, strengths, and most definitely your weaknesses. Leaning into your personal brand by crafting your unique PVP is what will help stand out.
Build Structure and Find Balance
Creating happiness and fulfillment requires hard work, which means having a good daily routine. You want to build a healthy work-life structure to help create balance and set yourself up for success. Being a professional means showing up and doing the work even when you don’t feel like it. Therefore, you must become a creature of successful daily habits and get obsessed with time management or you will begin drowning in chaos.
