Give yourself some self-care by diversifying your happiness to enrich your wellbeing and build the life you want.

    Multiple Streams of Happiness

It’s safe to say 2020 has not turned out how you might have expected. Life has its ups and downs and in times of struggle, I know it can be hard to find a way forward. But you must get intentional about your mindset and the life you want.

As I sat on my balcony that is perched on a three-story apartment complex in the Atlanta suburbs, looking out over a sea of trees to the breathtaking peaks beyond. My day punctuated by the sound of birds chirping and whispering leaves — a grin of pleasure came across my face. No, I don’t have it all, but I had found a way to make do with what I did. Looking back to just a few years ago, I could never have imagined uprooting my life and moving across the country to a city where I had never been before. Life has certainly changed from my little apartment in New York City.

It’s taken a while to get here — a place of overall happiness. The main turning point for me was realizing that there are some things I couldn’t control. So instead of constantly dwelling on things I can’t control, I redirected my energy towards diversifying my streams of happiness to enrich my wellbeing and life.

Research shows that happy people are typically much more successful and that a happy person is a better person. But happiness isn’t something that just happens, you have to create your happiness opportunities. There is only one problem. Many of you only invest in one stream of happiness. And one stream of happiness creates a dependency which once severed, affects your sense of wellbeing. Therefore, you want to diversify your happy to have other streams of happiness to tap into.

If you’re trying to diversify your happiness, recognize that real happiness comes from within and you have the power to build self-efficacy by mastering some simple habits. Below are a few ways you can diversify your happiness and enrich your life.

    • Engage in activities that add value and bring you joy.
    • Learn to live in the moment, taking time to enjoy the little things in life.
    • Learn to stand in your truth and live your values.
    • Learn to forgive and not hold onto grudges.
    • Think positive thoughts and approach each day with optimism.
    • Focus your energy and efforts on the things that are truly important.
    • Start a gratitude journal and take 5 minutes a day to write what you’re thankful for.
    • Explore and rewrite your narrative in a new way.
    • Build meaningful connections and surround yourself with supportive relationships.
    • Unplug from social media from time to time.
    • Reward your self for your wins — big or small, and celebrate other people’s success.
    • Spend time alone to meditate or reflect on your dreams and desires.
    • Treat others with respect and kindness.
