Marvel’s black superhero film challenges Hollywood’s industry norms and charges across the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

As Disney releases a new movie “A Wrinkle In Time”, they are also celebrating a major milestone with the Ryan Coogler-directed mega-hit film “Black Panther”. Black Panther continues to roar as it became a $1 billion film worldwide. With $521 million domestically in the U.S., the critically acclaimed movie is on the verge of becoming the second highest-grossing superhero film of all time, passing “The Dark Knight”.

The “Black Panther” movie on its opening day in China, became the 33rd [no. 9 domestically] film in box office history to cross the $1 billion mark. And to top it off, Black Panther is the only Marvel black film, and the fifth film in the Marvel universe to reach this milestone. However, a majority of the film’s revenue (60%) is coming from the U.S. as opposed to overseas as with “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

The film is set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda where women are free to demonstrate their power and agency. Starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa (Black Panther), alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker. The history-making mega-movie and its almost all-black cast premiered during Black History Month, challenging Hollywood’s myths about predominantly black casts while highlighting the entire African diaspora and exploring a variety of themes including African colonization, ethnic identity, gender equity, diversity, and inclusion.
